Depression

“David” was a successful business consultant with a beautiful wife and three healthy children.  He loved to spend time with his family, volunteered to coach his son’s football team, and would often host dinner and game nights for neighbors and friends.  He was a well-respected man at his church, in his neighborhood, and at work.

However, life started to feel bleak for David after he lost an important contract and several of his investments plummeted.  Around that time, his youngest son was diagnosed with autism.  David lost his "joie de vivre" and he began to feel like his future was hopeless.  He became more negative with his wife and children, quit coaching football, and stopped going to church. The sudden and dramatic change in his attitude and mood caused his wife and friends to become concerned.

What David experienced is not uncommon and could indicate a clinical depression.  There are several factors that can contribute to depression, including biological, cognitive, behavioral, environmental, and interpersonal factors. Working with a therapist can provide a full assessment and understanding of the factors contributing to an individual’s depression.

Depression affects people of all ages – children, teenagers and adults.  It is important to get help if you or someone you know is experiencing the following types of thoughts, feelings or behaviors:

  • I am worthless and can’t do anything about it.
  • I hate who I am most days.
  • I can’t stop crying.
  • I feel gut-wrenching pain, but no one understands.
  • My life and the world around me are dark and without hope.
  • I feel helpless and worthless.
  • I often turn to alcohol, food, or other substances to feel alive.
  • All I want to do is sleep.
  • I can’t concentrate on anything.
  • I am irritable and lash out at those around me.
  • I want to be left alone.

If you are consistently having these types of thoughts, feelings or behaviors, you may be suffering from depression.  Know that you are not alone and there are people who can help. Our compassionate counselors can assist you on your journey.  By engaging in therapy, many of our clients find relief and regain their "joie de vivre."
